Got fun Avrom (God of Abraham) - prayer for the end of the Sabbath

Of course this is not a theater song but the Yiddish theater constantly drew from religious material in order to touch the heartstrings of its audience. I learned this prayer for Sheva Zucker - my long-ago rendition can be heard on the cds that accompany her Introduction to Yiddish, Volume II.

She asked me to sing it at the beginning of my presentation this past weekend.

There are many versions of this prayer and it is constantly folk-processed into new forms. Here is the translation of Sheva's version:

God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,
Protect your people Israel, shelter your people Israel
The holy Sabbath is leaving
Let a new week come with luck and blessings
And for all of us, health and success
We're asking you, dear God.
And we say, amen
